Treatment of Fibroids
What Are Fibroids?
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that can occur in or around the uterus (womb). Attending for a private consultation with Gyneaesthetics for investigations into uterine fibroids treatment and removal surgery, as well as other possible treatments such as embolisation, means that you can rest assure that your case will receive the full attention of our specialists, including consultant Gynaecologist Mohammad Masood. Mr Masood is an expert in delicate gynaecological surgery such as fibroid removal.
Fibroids are made up of fibrous tissue and muscle. They can vary in shape and size and are common, affecting around 1 in 3 at some time in their life, although, according to research, they are most commonly found in females aged between 30 and 50. If you have had a child then you have a lower chance of developing them than someone who has not had a child and this chance gets lower and lower if you have more children.
Fibroid Symptoms
As fibroids can be a condition without any obvious symptoms (only a third actually suffer from the symptoms) they can sometimes go undiagnosed until a routine gynaecological examination.
Should you suffer from any of the following it is advisable:
- Lower back or abdominal pain
- Painful or heavy periods
- Discomfort or pain during or after sex
- An increased need to urinate compared to normal
- Constipation
In extremely rare cases, fibroid complications can lead to issues involving pregnancies or they could cause infertility.

Fibroid Treatments
Fibroids grow in the womb and can affect differing areas depending on the type of fibroid. Treatment of Fibroids depends on the symptoms they cause. These includes heavy periods, pressure effects on other organs and complications of Fibroids like degeneration. Depending upon the location of Fibroids they are classified into following types.
- Intramural Fibroid – grows inside the muscle wall of the womb
- Subserosal Fibroid – this type of fibroid grows outside the womb wall growing towards the pelvis
- Submucosal Fibroid – a fibroid which grows towards the cavity of the womb from the layer of muscle beneath the womb’s inner lining
- Pedunculated Fibroid – this is basically a Subserosal or Submucosal Fibroid which is joined to the womb by a small branch of tissue
